Water Mist Fire Protection for Archives and Museums
Archive and museum fire protection requires a careful balance. A fire must be controlled quickly, but the suppression system should not create unnecessary damage to documents, exhibits, historic interiors or sensitive equipment.
Water mist may be considered for some archive storage rooms, museum galleries and heritage buildings because it uses fine droplets to absorb heat and limit fire development. However, it is not automatically suitable for every collection or building. Its performance depends on the fire hazard, enclosure, ventilation, nozzle arrangement and tested system configuration.
Project teams should therefore evaluate the complete space rather than selecting a system only because it may use less water than conventional sprinklers.

Can Water Mist Be Used in Archives and Museums?
Water mist can be used for archive and museum fire protection when the proposed system has been tested or approved for the relevant hazard and installation conditions. The design must consider collection sensitivity, room geometry, ventilation, obstructions, drainage and the requirements of the local authority having jurisdiction.
A high-pressure water mist fire suppression system should be treated as an engineered system. Nozzle selection, operating pressure, spacing and discharge duration cannot be separated from the fire scenario the system is expected to control.
Why Are Archives and Museums Different?
Archives and museums often contain several types of fire risk within the same building. Paper records, books, timber furniture, textiles, plastics, electrical equipment and temporary exhibition materials may all require different protection considerations.
The value of the contents also changes the design objective. In a normal commercial building, the main priorities may be life safety and preventing fire spread. In an archive or museum, the project team may also need to limit smoke contamination, water exposure and disruption to conservation conditions.
Building geometry can make the problem more complicated. Typical issues include:
- High or decorative ceilings
- Dense shelving and mobile storage racks
- Display cases and partitions that obstruct discharge
- Restricted access for new pipework
- Historic surfaces that cannot easily be altered
- Ventilation systems that influence mist movement
- Collections that cannot tolerate prolonged moisture exposure
These conditions should be documented before a suppression method is selected.

What Should Engineers Check Before Design?
The first step is to define what is being protected. An archive storage room, public gallery, restoration workshop and electrical room should not automatically share the same design assumptions.
The project team should then review the following factors:
- Fire hazards: Identify combustible materials, electrical equipment, storage arrangements and possible concealed fire locations.
- Protection objective: Establish whether the priority is fire control, extinguishment, life safety, property protection or a combination of these objectives.
- Room geometry: Record ceiling height, beams, shelving, display cases and other objects that could affect mist distribution.
- Ventilation: Review normal and emergency HVAC operation, open doors and other air paths that may carry mist away from the protected area.
- System evidence: Confirm that the proposed nozzle and system configuration are supported by an appropriate fire-test protocol, listing or project approval.
- Water supply: Check water quality, available capacity, pump arrangement and the required discharge duration.
- Drainage and recovery: Plan how discharged water will be collected and how wet or smoke-affected materials will be handled.
- Operation and maintenance: Make sure nozzles remain unobstructed and that future exhibition or shelving changes are controlled.
A successful design connects fire engineering with collection management. Conservators, facility managers, fire engineers and the approval authority should be involved before the equipment layout is finalized.

Which Standards and Approvals May Apply?
NFPA 750 provides requirements relating to the design, installation, testing and maintenance of water mist fire protection systems.
For cultural properties, project teams may also need to consider NFPA 909. Where the museum or archive occupies a historic structure, NFPA 914 may also be relevant.
The applicable standard depends on the country, building classification, collection and approval route. Referencing a standard does not by itself demonstrate that a particular system is approved for every archive or museum application. The system’s test evidence and the requirements of the local authority must still be confirmed.
When May Water Mist Not Be the Right Choice?
Water mist may be unsuitable when the proposed hazard falls outside the system’s tested application, when strong air movement prevents reliable distribution or when the building cannot support the required inspection and maintenance programme.
It may also be the wrong choice if a project team assumes that reduced water discharge means there is no risk of water damage. Water mist still introduces water into the protected area. Sensitive collections may require cabinets, covers, drainage provisions and a documented recovery plan.
In some projects, sprinklers, gaseous suppression, compartmentation or a combined strategy may provide a clearer approval path. The decision should follow the risk assessment rather than a preference for one technology.
