What is a fire water tank?

A fire water tank stores water reserved for a building or site’s fire protection systems, such as sprinklers, hydrants or fire monitors. Its usable capacity, refill arrangement and pump connections must match the approved fire protection design and the requirements that apply at the project location.
LeAqua can coordinate modular storage with pump and control requirements. The proposal starts with the specified fire demand, effective storage volume and site layout, so the tank can be reviewed as part of the complete water supply system.
Tank or coordinated system
Choose the configuration that fits your project
The right scope depends on whether your pumps, controls and pump room are already specified or need to be coordinated with the tank.

Tank package
Standalone fire water tank
For projects with a separate pump room, an existing fire pump system or an independently designed mechanical package.
- Tank structure, roof and access arrangements
- Project-defined inlet, outlet, overflow and drain connections
- Support and foundation interface requirements
- Material and installation documentation within the agreed scope
Coordinate early: suction location, minimum operating level, service clearances and the responsibilities of the tank and pump suppliers.

Coordinated system
Integrated tank and pump station
For projects that need water storage, the pump arrangement and controls planned together within one coordinated layout.
- Storage and pump-room arrangement
- Fire pumps and pressure-maintenance equipment as specified
- Pipework and control interfaces within the agreed package
- Optional monitoring defined in the project specification
Coordinate early: pump duties, power supply, equipment approvals, access and the boundary between factory supply and site work.
Define the full supply boundary. Foundations, external pipework, power connections, installation and commissioning should be allocated explicitly in the quotation. An integrated package does not automatically include every site activity.

How to specify a fire water storage tank
Nominal tank size is only one input. Use the approved fire design to establish the water reserve, then resolve the tank’s structural and hydraulic interfaces.
| Design input | What to establish | Why it affects the tank |
|---|---|---|
| Fire demand & duration | The required flow, operating duration and simultaneous system demands from the fire protection design. | Sets the required reserve; building area alone does not determine tank capacity. |
| Effective storage volume | Usable volume between the relevant operating levels, with suction limitations and freeboard identified. | The geometric tank volume is not necessarily the volume available for firefighting. |
| Refill & pump interfaces | Refill source, suction details, minimum level, outlet arrangement and any required anti-vortex provisions. | The stored water must be accessible to the specified pump arrangement. |
| Site & structural conditions | Available footprint, foundation, indoor/outdoor location, access, wind and seismic design inputs. | Determines the layout, supports and installation method. Underground designs also require soil and groundwater review. |
| Water & environment | Water chemistry, temperature, corrosion exposure and any freeze-protection requirements. | Informs the selection of panels, seals, fittings and protective measures. |
| Project acceptance | Applicable standards, required documents, inspections and any equipment listing or approval requirements. | Allows the proposed configuration to be checked before procurement. |
Select the material for the specified duty
Stainless steel, GRP and composite sectional tanks are product options to evaluate. Suitability depends on the exact construction, water conditions and project acceptance requirements.
Stainless steel
Review the grade, welded or bolted construction, water chemistry, fabrication details and maintenance access.
GRP / FRP
Review the panel system, temperature limits, support arrangement, seals and acceptance of the specified fire-service configuration.
Composite sectional tanks
Confirm the panel build-up, water-contact layer, external protection and the required structural configuration.
Structural form is a separate choice from material. Explore the double-sided arc-ribbed tank design where its configured layout suits the project.
Standards & project acceptance
Confirm the design basis before selecting equipment

Fire water tank requirements are set by the approved fire-protection design, applicable local regulations, insurer requirements and the authority having jurisdiction. Where a project uses NFPA-based specifications, NFPA 22 may be relevant to private fire-protection water tanks; confirm the applicable edition, acceptance route and any required UL, FM or other approvals before procurement.
LeAqua’s engineering background also includes Chinese technical references for integrated fire pump stations. These references provide engineering context but do not replace destination-market codes, approvals or certifications. See Engineering Standards & Technical References for the documented reference scope.
A reference to a standard does not certify a particular tank or pump. Review the proposed model, supporting documents and acceptance route with the project’s fire-protection designer and authority having jurisdiction.

Fire water tank buying questions
Can one tank serve both fire protection and domestic water?
Only where the applicable design and approval requirements permit it. The arrangement must preserve the required fire reserve and address water quality, outlet levels, controls and maintenance. Have the fire and building-services designers confirm the arrangement before choosing a shared tank.
What determines the price of a fire water tank?
Effective capacity, dimensions, panel material, structural loads, connections, installation conditions and the agreed supply scope all affect the quotation. A tank-only price should not be compared directly with a package that also includes pumps, controls, freight or site services.
What if the project requires a specific listing or approval?
Include that requirement in the initial enquiry, identifying whether it applies to the tank, pumps, controllers or the complete arrangement. The supporting documents and availability must be checked for the proposed equipment; approval of one component does not establish approval of the whole system.
Can an existing fire water tank be replaced?
A replacement can be evaluated against the existing capacity, foundation, access and pipe connections. Any interruption to fire protection needs an approved impairment and temporary-protection plan coordinated by the responsible project team. Include these constraints when requesting the replacement proposal.

Share the information you already have. It helps us define the tank configuration, supply scope and documents needed for a useful proposal.
- Project location and required standard
- Required effective capacity, or the design fire demand and duration
- Available footprint, height and installation conditions
- Water quality and environmental exposure
- Tank-only or tank-and-pump scope; specified flow and head if available
- Required delivery schedule and site-service scope
If the fire design is still being developed, say which inputs are provisional so they can be identified in the proposal.
